Power to heat for the Greater Region Renewables Integration and Development

 Period

2016-2019

 Context

The initial issue is centred on the challenges faced by the electricity grid, namely the need to ensure a continuous and ever-increasing source of energy, despite the production of electricity from intermittent renewable energy sources and the arrival at the end of the life of a large number of electricity generation plants. The solution envisaged in this project is oriented towards the use of heat pumps as a storage solution (in the form of heat) in order to absorb the share of local electricity production that cannot always be rejected to the network (congestion problem) and thus reconcile demand and electricity production. This solution is justified given that a very important part of the total energy of the residential sector is dedicated to home heating.

 Objectives

The final goal of the project is to propose a new organisation of the electricity and energy market for the Greater Region. This new organisation will involve technical, economic and sociological aspects. It will have to mobilise all actors in the economic chain and ensure good communication towards political decision-makers in order to make the results of this project as operational as possible. The project therefore aims to analyse the problem on a cross-border (transnational) scale in the Greater Region. How to technically, economically and ecologically absorb the local surplus of renewable electricity production from the Saar and the Rhineland (far ahead in terms of renewable electricity production) to other neighbouring regions through intelligent management.

 Specific BEMS Tasks
  • In addition to project coordination, the BEMS team is active in several project tasks:

  • Selection, modelling and analysis of residential buildings typical of the Greater Region's housing stock

  • Analysis of different heat production systems and more particularly heat pumps

  • Development of a heat pump control system based on a predictive control model

  • Tests in the Jacques Geelen laboratory

  • Field testing
